Which circumcision method is right for me or my child?

This depends on several factors, including age, anatomy, weight, medical history, and overall suitability. During your consultation, we will assess you or your child and explain the safest and most appropriate method.

Can parents stay during the procedure?

Yes, parents are welcome to remain with their child to offer comfort and reassurance.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure itself takes about 10-20 minutes depending on the method. Before we can do the procedure, we need to give the numbing cream time to work. After the procedure you need to wait for a while before being discharged. For the Mogen Clamp method it takes up to 35 - 45 minutes for the procedure. Most families are able to go home within 2 hours of their appointment time.

Is the procedure painful?

In our clinic, we use a numbing cream and give injections. We put the numbing cream on first. This makes the injections we give less painful. The cream on its own does not provide adequate anaesthesia. After 30-40 minutes, we give injections at the base of the penis. We then wait for 5 minutes and test the skin before we start. Babies can cry for all sorts of reasons, but if it's felt that the baby is having pain, we will give a little bit more anaesthetic. The procedure itself should be painless. We will NOT do any procedure without using anaesthetic.

What type of anaesthetic will be used?

Most circumcisions can be safely performed under local anaesthetic. In our clinic we use a numbing cream and give injections (local anaesthetic).

What should we bring to the appointment?

Parents or legal guardian(s) must bring photographic ID, such as a passport or driver’s license, and the baby’s red book or birth certificate. We also recommend bringing spare nappies, baby wipes, a blanket, and milk or formula for feeding after the procedure.

How should we prepare before attending?

Pease arrive on time to help the smooth running of the clinic. We recommend planning your journey in advance. Find us for support in planning your journey. If you think you may be late, contact us as your appointment may otherwise need to be cancelled. If you are bringing a child, please ensure they are generally well on the day of the procedure, as we may need to postpone if they are unwell. On arrival, you will be asked to fill out of a form to register with our clinic and fill out any relevant paperwork, you will then sign a consent form.

Do you offer follow-up aftercare?

Yes. We have an open-door policy, and you are welcome to return as often as needed until your baby has fully recovered. All follow-up appointments are included at no extra cost. We also provide aftercare bags containing essential items to support the healing and comfort of you or child at home.

What is included in the aftercare bags provided by the clinic?

The care bag for babies and children contains Paracetamol (oral suspension), ibuprofen for children aged 1+, Germolene antiseptic cream, a pack of gauze, a measuring syringe for the paracetamol or ibuprofen, and a spray bottle (to make a salt-water solution for cleaning). The aftercare bag for adults contains a pack of gauze, bandages, scissors, plasters, and an antibiotic ointment.

What should we expect during recovery?

We’ll provide full aftercare instructions, including how to clean the area and what normal healing looks like. It is important to read the aftercare instructions, as they contain guidance to help you care for your baby or child. Please keep any prescriptions in a safe place, as they cannot be easily replaced and the clinic is not open every day. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call us.

Can we bring a relative or friend?

Yes, up to two adults may attend with one child. We strongly advise leaving other children at home or with a relative to maintain a calm environment.

Is the procedure different for adults?

Yes. Adults and older children typically undergo the Mogen Clamp Method, which takes longer and includes sutures. We will explain the process in full during your consultation.

Can an adult bring a support person?

Yes, adults may bring one support person if they wish.

What is the recovery like for adults?

Adults usually experience a longer healing period compared to babies. We will provide detailed aftercare instructions, guidance on pain relief, and follow-up support as needed.

Most people need around one week off work, although this depends on the type of work you do. You may be able to return to work sooner if your job involves mainly sitting or light duties, but you may need more time off if your work involves heavy physical activity. If required, we can provide a letter for your employer.
